APPLICATIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE (IAM):

Artificial Intelligence is also entering the world of medicine. It is not a question of replacing the link between the patient and the doctor but of reinforcing it. The interest is to facilitate the follow-up of the patient. AI then intervenes in the follow-up of the treatment. The patient - that is, everyone - can get answers to all his health questions thanks to chatbots that rely on Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

But in the coming years, Artificial Intelligence will be used more and more to help medical staff in hospitals to facilitate patient care from a treatment point of view, to follow up on the patient's progress and to create the medical file itself. The contribution of AI is thus being integrated into all facets of the drug industry, including R&D. The development time of a drug can be reduced by half, to about 6 or 7 years.

Artificial Intelligence in the medicine of tomorrow:

Artificial Intelligence is at the heart of research in the medical field and its applications are now aimed at improving the quality of care for tomorrow's medicine. AI focuses on the development of assisted operations, personalized treatments, remote patient monitoring, help in the treatment of cancer, ... and also on a more advanced information of mutual insurance companies.

The benefits of Artificial Intelligence in medicine:

AI helps oncologists to make decisions, gives autonomy to patients suffering from diabetes, allows greater precision in medical imaging, and, in the long run, will avoid the need for certain examinations deemed "intrusive" for patients. Artificial Intelligence reads patients' files and, thanks to the additional information provided by the doctor, it can now give a diagnosis and establish several treatment proposals. AI-based solutions have helped in the treatment of 13 types of cancers.

However, Artificial Intelligence does not tend to replace doctors, but complements the doctor's judgment to allow him to modify or confirm his diagnosis. The latter will make the decision using his relational and emotional intelligence, an aspect of intelligence that machines do not possess.

AI, through its algorithms, helps mainly in the elaboration of diagnoses. Indeed, the machine prescribes the same diagnosis as the doctors in 99% of the cases, and in 30% of the cases, it proposes a more adapted treatment than that of the specialists. It manages to detect breast cancer in 89% of cases, while specialists detect it in 73% of cases. The machines can also detect heart attacks by telephone. Thus, robotics is spreading its web in many areas of medicine.

The arrival of Artificial Intelligence in the mutual insurance sector:

Mutual insurance companies are increasingly using AI to improve their services. However, machines have limitations: the algorithm helps humans, but cannot replace them. InsurTech refers to all start-ups that create new services and insurance offers that are 100% digital and based on the advances enabled by digital, data collection and analysis. Those already in place can perform only certain human tasks more efficiently. Insurance comparison, customer experience and the fight against fraud are areas where the introduction of Artificial Intelligence is beneficial and where it allows insurers to increase their efficiency and productivity.

The robot simply supports the advisor, for example when purchasing health insurance online. Tomorrow's insurers will have to be recruited on the basis of empathy and listening skills, rather than technical knowledge.

Thus, many mutual insurance companies have already opted for the implementation of Artificial Intelligence in their system.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the branch of computing dedicated to creating systems to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence.

Applications are still at an early stage in medicine, but the potential is enormous in a variety of areas:

precision medicine for cardiovascular disease and cancer;
image recognition for the diagnosis of cancer and retinal disease;
drug design;
Improved health care delivery;
and more.

The University is very well positioned to advance this area of research. World-renowned pioneers as made major contributions to the science of AI.

News:
The role of natural leader for the applications of this technology in medicine. We have several researchers who stand out in this field with their achievements:

Artificial intelligence contributes to cancer research
Artificial intelligence for better control of refractory epilepsy
